Keraben Grupo is certified with the ISO 50.001

The ISO 50.001 energy efficiency certificate guarantees that the strictest criteria are applied in the running of Keraben Grupo’s facilities in matters concerning energy efficiency, the reduction and optimization of energy consumption and environmental care.

  • It is the first ceramic tile manufacturer to be awarded the ISO 50.001 certificate for all its production centres.
  • Over the last five years, Keraben Grupo has boosted its tile output by 70% and cut its energy consumption by 12%.

Gas and electricity are essential resources in the production of ceramic wall and floor tiles, accounting for over 20% of the production cost of this product. That is why Keraben Grupo has always striven to reduce its energy costs.

Over the years, thanks to an in-depth analysis of energy spending, the tile group has introduced initiatives aimed at reducing this consumption with cross-cutting effects throughout the whole company. These initiatives have required in-house training, the reorganization of manufacturing machinery, investment into Best Available Techniques (BATs) and new efficient industrial equipment (efficient presses, energy recovery equipment, energy consumption control devices and eco-friendly kilns, among others).

These efforts have been endorsed through the obtainment of the ISO 50.001 certificate, which guarantees that the strictest criteria are applied in matters concerning energy efficiency, the reduction and optimization of energy consumption and environmental care in all the tile group’s production centres (its spray-drying facilities and wall and floor tile manufacturing plants)

The outcome is clear: over the last five years, Keraben Grupo has boosted its tile output by 69% and cut its energy consumption by 12%.

Committed to energy efficiency

Keraben Grupo’s commitment to energy efficiency has been evident since the company’s foundation. In 1990, Keraben Grupo pioneered the first cogeneration unit to be used by the tile industry in the generation of electricity and re-use of residual heat from the process.

In 2007, the company embarked on the introduction of an energy efficiency management system that would allow it to achieve two predefined goals: to reduce energy consumption while also cutting the production cost of its tile products.

In 2009, the first energy audit was carried out, paving the way for the obtainment of the certificate that Keraben Grupo has been awarded for all its production centres.

One of the latest measures that it has taken is the introduction of a custom-developed integrated energy management software programme. This identifies any energy deviation that occurs in any of the production processes in real time.

And that is not all. In addition to the energy reduction targets set in accordance with the ISO 50.001 standard, the company’s philosophy of ongoing improvements spur it on to continue taking steps to reduce its energy costs.
